Let's get started!
Are you employed at a company or an architectural design firm?
I am Employed at an Planning and Construction Company.
I can provide you with the Link of the Company
or on facebook : ceta general invest group
What kind of expertise do you need to use a laser cutter?
I got a one-week schooling at the Technical University of Vienna for the Laser and Fraser use. If you attend the course and pass the exam, you are skilled enough to use a Laser cutter, but not to repair it or re-program it if necessary.
Which software helps the most in making architectural models?
Well, it depends if you want to use a laser or not. For the Laser which I use, usually I draw the parts that need to be cut on Archicad. The rest of the Modell is then Handmade.
What is educational background and your what was your major?
I am a Bachelor of Architecture. But the Laser usage was not required to get my degree. I made the laser course to make my study and work time easier.
What kind of models do you dream of making in the future?
I want to build the Empire State Building, but this requires a lot of time and money. (money- depends of the scale you want to make it, i would prefer 1:100)
How difficult is it to make architectural models using various tools?
It really depends on how detailed the Modell has to be. The scale of details, defines the diffuculty.
What kind of features are available in your usual lastercutter?
For my Models, I use only cutting and engraving. I never saw or heard that you can use this kind of Laser for any other things in the Model building branch
Is your work limited to architectural models or does it encompass more areas?
I am not a Professional Model builder. I help out at the Company if a Model is required, so this means I am limited only to Architectural Models.
Do you or your firm purchase laser cutters or are they available on hire basis?
We do not use them very often and since they are very expencive, we take them on hire basis.
Do you need technical knowhow to use a laser cutter or a fraser?
I got a one-week schooling at the Technical University of Vienna for the Laser and Fraser use. If you attend the course and pass the exam, you are skilled enough to use a Laser cutter, but not to repair it or re-program it if necessary. Yet there are extra courses that you can take.
On what materials should a laser cutter never be used?
Laser cutters work with a highly dense light beam. This means the laser creates a lot of heat. Yet the laser moves so fast that you can use it on carton. It happens that they start burning sometimes but just for some seconds. What you shouldn’t use a laser for are materials that can melt like, Plastic or Plexy glass.
Is there any difference between a lasercutter and a laser punching machine?
I think that they are the same. Maybe they are varied by the strength of the laser, since the laser we use do not cut metal parts ( at least not thick parts)
How much experience do you have in this line of work?
2 Years in University and 2 Years at my Company but I have not been using it on daily basis.
What do you except cutting at your work?
What is your exact role in your organization and your work duties?
I am an Architect. I am more focused on analyzing the surroundings and try to find features in the surroundings of the site that can be taken and used in the planning process. Every Projects needs to be sensed and it needs to work together with the environment.
What was your fave project and what made it so special?
My favorite project until now was my Thesis for my bachelor in University. It was a residential building, What made it so special was that it had in 100m length and 30m width, more than 72 apartments in only 6 floors ( the first and the last floor were Maisonette) with a Middle-level development. The facade had to be all with terraces and every Apartment had to have 20% of the surface in terraces. It was a challenge, but my most exciting project until now.
What kind of architectural model building projects have you been involved in?
Mainly in residential buildings. But also Conceptual Modells.
If you have choise to build something what it will be?
What kind of materials or software do you use for your models?
Usually I use Archicad for drawing the parts that need to be cut. As a material i use Finish carton, since its is the easiest to edit if something goes wrong with the cutting.
Do you need specific watt power in your lastercutter for specific uses?
To be Honest i do not know that since we only rent a space where the lasers are allready installed
Apart from architectural models, what other areas are laser cutting machines used?
There are also stronger lasers with more power, and they are used to cut metal parts like car parts, or parts of any other machinery.
Which companies offer the best laser cutters in the market?
I would say ThunderLaser and BossLaser.
What kind of safety precautions do you take while using lastercutters and frasers?
Actually there are not so many, after you complete the course you are instructed well enough to not make any dangerous mistakes, the lasers are safely programed. For instance, they don’t start if they are not closed properly, they don’t start if you don’t fix the material exactly, etc.
What kind of experiences have you had with lastercutters and erasers?
Untill now only in Model building. i have not used it for other purposes.
Are lasecutters capable of customisation and precision cutting?
Yes they are, they are able to cut everything exactly the way you draw it on a CAD program, unless the distance between the cutting line is higher than 2mm, otherwise it will burn the material because of the double heat it gets from the laser going over it two times.
What kind of models have you made so far in your regular work?
Only Architectural work, usually at the size of 1:200 and 1:100, and some Concept Models in the size of 1:500
Is a laser cutter different from a fraser with different functions?
To prepare the software for cutting, it is almost the same process. The difference is that lasers are made for precise cutting of thin materials like carton. A Fraser cuts thicker materials like wood pieces and metal.
What kind of materials is a laser cutter capable of cutting and shaping?
lasers are made for precise cutting of thin materials like carton. A Fraser cuts thicker materials like wood pieces and metal.
What kind of materials do you usually work with in your models?
Usually Finish carton. Because it is easy to edit in case it is needed
Are laser cutters and erasers easy to use in model building?
Once you finish the course for it , they are. It is a hard piece of work drawing all the pieces if you have a lot of them. But the rest is easly done.
Is it sensible to opt for a charging and storage system based machine?
What can be done to make architectural model making easier?
It is important that you calculate everything before you draw the pieces you need to cut. For example, every material has a thickness, if you do not calculate the thickness of the material before then you will have an unprecise model. If you keep in mind all the factors befor you start using the laser or fraser, it will be much easier than cutting every piece by yourself.
How long does it take to make your average regular model?
It really depends on the size and how detailed that is required. Usually between 3 days and a week. If it is a really detailed Model it can take me up to 2 weeks to get it done well.
Can people use laser cutters after checking out tutorials and help resources?
It is possible i think, but i do not know if anyone will allow you to use a laser without a certification that proves that you finished a course.
Is a laser cutter safe to use during model building?
Yes it is. The lasers are safely programed. For instance, they don’t start if they are not closed properly, they don’t start if you don’t fix the material exactly, etc.
What kind of functions do the combo or hybrid laser cutting machines have?
What kind of training did you undergo to work with lasercutters and frasers?
I finished a course in the Technical University of Vienna during my University time.
What points should be kept in mind while using laser cutters?
How did you get interested in this line of work?
It really depends on the size and how detailed that is required. Usually between 3 days and a week. If it is a really detailed Model it can take me up to 2 weeks to get it done well. Well, after a made a Model without any lasers or Frasers and it took me about a week to only cut the pieces by hand. I realized that i could save myself a lot of time by using a Laser that was right next to room I usually spent my time in University. So i decided to take a course and get a permission to use the laser.
